- Purpose of SCC - Cindy passed out updated papers for the Council Member’s binders
- School Improvement Plans (TSSA, School Land Trust), budget and goals
- For Goal #3: money is being used to improve digital access and upgrade technology for teachers. Several teachers have outdated projectors which are being replaced with large TVs. The district is matching funds right now for this upgrade so we were able to access more funds for this transition.
- Ipads with AppleTV are being ordered to go along with the new TVs in order to enable the teachers to better utilize teaching tools. Some of the TVs are being installed with fixed mounts, some with moving mounts. We will access which work best and make adjustments as needed.
- School Improvement Plans (TSSA, School Land Trust), budget and goals
- Digital Citizenship/Safety
- Sarah Larsen takes care of this but this year we are adding a school safety week in conjunction with the PTA (in place of Red Ribbon Week).
- STEAM night is during the planned week so a digital safety presentation will be part of the rotation. The Halloween Parade/Dress up day will be
- Friday, Oct 27 which is at the end of Safety Week. No dressing up will be allowed on Halloween this year (which is a Tuesday)
- Safety (SNAP) - updated map
- Comments, Questions
- Pick up/drop off concern brought up by Amie Earl
- Some younger students need help with seat belts/car seats and the parents get out of the car in the pick up line to help. This is creating back-ups.
- Pick up/drop off concern brought up by Amie Earl
- Solution: talk with parents of preschool and kindergarteners about parking in the the parking lot and coming into the school to pick up if their child needs help or have those parents pull to the front of the horseshoe so they are more out of the way

Nibley City Walkability Study

-
It was discussed that the survey should come from Nibley city (instead of from the school) - add a question to determine if the responder has students in Nibley Elementary or Heritage Elementary
-
The city could incentivize parents to respond by entering them into a drawing for a discount to a Nibley Rec program
-
-

Safe Routes Plan Update/Walkability Survey Results
-
Cindy had a meeting Dec 20 with Nibley City Reps (including city engineer), a police officer, Natalie from Bear River Health, and Amie
-
Map has been updated to reflect crossing guards, 2 hazard signs added to indicate areas of concern, and not all stop signs were added because it made the map too cluttered. The hazard signs were placed at the crossing by Strata and across 800 West by the park - adding the hazard signs indicates we acknowledge that students do cross there but it is not the recommended (or safest) route. The hazard signs might give us some “teeth” when it comes to getting more crossing guards and/or a mid-block crossing near Strata (with Logan City)
-
Cindy looked into the cost of a crossing guard with the thought that the school might be able to use some funding to split the cost of an additional crossing guard with Nibley City. The cost is $9000/year, so $4500 a year is a little out of reach as that is a lot of money that should be used for instructional support.
-
It is not a good option to have a teacher man the crossing in front of the school to free up a guard to cover 800West by the park - that is not a role teachers should be playing due to safety (technically that crossing is not on school grounds, and that would require a different type of relationship with parents)
-
Could the PTA ask for parent volunteers to cover a crossing guard position?
-
Likely would not be able to find constant coverage
-
Some parents just want their children to learn to cross the street on their own so are not concerned enough to help
-
-
Traffic flow/concerns will change as more housing is built and as the new middle school gets finished in the next few years. There could be some boundary changes as the middle school gets finished and 6th grade moves out of elementary school, however, Nibley Elementary will likely remain a “walking” school. As more apartments get built around Strata, there will be an increased need for additional crossing guards which will need to be addressed - at some point hopefully we will have 5 crossing guards
-
Homework: review results of survey that was sent out in December and bring any questions/concerns next month
-
Data that a classroom took about temperature and driving vs walking to school for several months was also given out to review
-
-
-
Technology Grant Funding
-
Schreiber Foods
-
Guymon Orthodontics
-
We received 2 matching grants - so Schreiber and Guymon Ortho will each contribute $1500 which will be matched, resulting in a total of $6000 which we will be able to use to help with tvs and ipads for teachers. This, in turn, frees up money which can be used to replace aging ChromeBooks
-
-
Additional Items for Discussion, Comments, Questions
-
Teaching Respect
-
This month’s assembly will be “rewarding” respectful behavior and talk about accountability
-

Provide PLC time for teachers - provide 2 half days during the school year for afternoon collaboration. This will cost roughly $4000. There will be one day prior to the school year allocated for curriculum development for the upcoming year, facilitating more efficient grade level PLC(Professional Learning Committee) practices
-
Reading Goal: Using the Acadience Reading assessment, K-3rd grade students will achieve 10% growth on composite reading score from the beginning of the year assessment to the end of the year assessment. Using the Wonders Comprehension Measurement tool, 4th - 6th grade students will achieve 65% proficiency on the end of the year assessment
-
Cindy will look at previous years Acadience growth to make sure that the goal is reasonable. The hope is to have 1-2% higher growth than previous years
-
Change from looking at the middle of the year scores to the end of the year scores
-
Wonders Comprehension Measurement tool will be new next year. We might need to alter the goal as we start using the program
-
-
Math Goal: Using iReady Diagnostic as student growth measure, students will exceed 57% median progress toward typical growth by the end of the academic school year.
-
The math data we had for this year was not accurate. Cindy will work to get better data to make sure that 57% median progress is a realistic goal

Student Safety
-
Student was hit in the crosswalk at 800 W 2600 S on April 30 - crossing guard was doing was she was supposed to, 4 children and a parent were in the crosswalk, driver was not paying attention
-
Update from Nibley City
-
Crossing guards now have flashing signs (battery operated) and will be given whistles
-
Quarterly meetings with all the crossing guards in the city to discuss concerns
-
City is looking at manuals and resources for traffic control options. Traffic studies are being re-done along 800 West to gather data to determine the best solution. Possible options:
-
4 way stop
-
School zone with flashing lights
-
Push button yellow flashing lights at the crossing
-
Multiple guards during certain times of the year when foot traffic is heaviest (there have been 2 crossing guards at 800 W 2600 S after school since the incident)
-
Go pro for crossing guards so they can send footage to sheriffs to increase the citations given in school zones. Providence City has done this with some success
-
City social media blitz in fall and early spring when the numbers of walkers increase
-
Safety assembly for kids and parents
-
-
In the past, 800 W 2600 S has been studied but was not busy enough for some of these interventions
-
Bear River Health is continuing their walkability study
-
-
CCSDUT appreciates Nibley being so proactive. Nibley is the safety walking community in the valley!
-
Discussion about parents who wave their children to their car to avoid the cross walk that crosses 2600 S by the school. Sheriffs are going to watch key areas and try to help educate parents. Also discussed intersection at 800 W Gibbons Lane by the park.
